CVHS – In the News and Other Media

Head Start stories are periodically highlighted in national, state and local media.  Champlain Valley Head Start has been featured in a variety of news stories or multi-media presentations over the years.  Wonderful stories about our program have appeared on local TV and radio, in newspaper articles, and in multi-media presentations developed by our own staff and, several years ago, by the staff of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.  Please click on the titles below to view the following stories and presentations.

Occupy the Classroom  In a recent New York Times article, Op-Ed Columnist Nicholas D. Kristof writes that Head Start has a significant long-term impact – former Head Start participants are significantly less likely than siblings to repeat grades, to be diagnosed with a learning disability, or to suffer the kind of poor health associated with poverty.  And, Head Start alumni were more likely than their siblings to graduate from high school and attend college.

NHSA – Keep the Window Open  National Head Start Association (NHSA) has launched the Keep the Window Open campaign to raise national awareness about the power of Head Start to be a Window of Opportunity for children in vulnerable circumstances.  More children are added to waiting lists every day.  We must all work together to keep the window open for the next generation of Americans.  As part of the Window campaign, NHSA is inviting Head Start parents, staff, volunteers, partners and alumni to share their stories about how Head Start has been a Window of Opportunity in their lives.  View the growing collection of videos.

More Vermont Kids Seeing the Dentist  WPTZ Channel 5 reports that Vermont dentists are working with Head Start and encouraging parents to schedule their children for dental exams before preschool.

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders Visits Champlain Valley Head Start  In June 2007, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont visited the Champlain Valley Head Start classroom at H.O. Wheeler Elementary School in Burlington.  This classroom and program option, in collaboration with the Burlington School District, has since been relocated to the Franklin Square Community Room in Burlington.
